A little about me…
My graduate and post-graduate research in Environmental Sustainability highlighted the importance to me of taking a person-centered approach to achieving sustainable connections with our different environments. Connecting with ourselves, to friends, family, and to nature improve our sense of wellbeing and contribute to a sustainable, fulfilling life. In a world where connections are becoming increasingly virtual, we can become less comfortable to experience human touch in a way that connects us.
Having worked with people for a number of years I decided to expand my professional interests to working with people holistically through body and mind therapies. I have trained with a leading teacher and practitioner in professional massage therapy with York Holistic Training and I can help provide you with an experience that can support you both physically and emotionally and promote an overall sense of wellbeing.
If you would like further information about the services I offer, please get in touch. I hope that we meet soon!
About Metta Massage Therapy
The MMT philosophy is to offer massage therapy with kindness and love and is a way of making a positive contribution and difference to your health and wellbeing.
Metta means to care and wish well for a fellow human without judgment, to accept them independently of agreeing or disagreeing with them and it is a universal love that can overcome all social, religious, ethnic, political and economic barriers. As a result of Metta, one can experience: joy, a true happiness in another's happiness. MMT is the manifestation of Metta and my core beliefs.
The MMT Approach
Our initial meeting will involve a comprehensive consultation so I can fully understand and appreciate your expectations and can design and deliver a treatment best suited to your needs. I would like to invite you to share a safe space with me so we can build a professional therapeutic relationship that will help improve your connection to yourself and with others. I will listen to you and your body and work at a pace that is comfortable for you. A kind of touch that says, ‘I see you; I hear you, and I care’.
Swedish massage is a scientific system of manipulations on the muscles and connective soft tissue of the body for the purpose of relaxation, rehabilitation, and health maintenance. It follows five basic strokes and their variations: effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), friction (cross fibre), percussion (rhythmic tapping), and vibration. By using a combination of these techniques, I can help relieve stress and pain and achieve holistic wellness.
Benefits of Massage Therapy
Massage therapy uses touch not only to relax the whole body, but also to provide a range of therapeutic health benefits. Some use it to simply relax and unwind, while others have regular massage to help them manage or cope with specific physical, mental or emotional issues.
One of the most notable benefits of massage is the stimulating effect that manipulating tissues has on the circulation of blood and lymph, which in turn helps to oxygenate tissues all over the body, distribute nutrients to each cell, and support the removal of waste.
The increase in local circulation to the area being massaged also has a warming effect that relieves muscular tension and chronic pain. By encouraging the body to enter into a relaxed state it allows tension to release and stimulate and strengthen the immune system.
Prioritising time to recharge the mind is key for balancing energy and managing our emotional health. Massage has an uplifting effect as touch boosts the body’s level of the ‘feel-good’ hormones; oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine.
Massage can also improve self-esteem, promote a sense of harmony and provide relief from stress, anxiety, and depression. All of these factors enhance the overall sense of wellbeing and in turn, promotes good quality, restful sleep.
